Nothing makes me happy.
Not because I’m an unhappy person.
But because happiness isn’t caused by anything.
Not by a new car, a week in Greece, or the best hair-day you’ve ever had.
The only reason these things seem to cause happiness is because temporarily, the mind shuts up about everything that’s wrong or lacking.
For a short while, everything seems to be exactly right the way it is.
This feeling can last a second, a minute, or a month, but always disappears.
Then you’re used to the car, the vacation is long forgotten, and your hair, well …
Again it feels like something’s wrong or missing.
Like something needs to change because what’s here now, is not the way it should be.
And new desires are born.
For the next vacation, a new house, losing weight or finding the perfect pair of shoes.
Desires become goals, plans, to-do lists.
Or mindset tweaks, manifestation rituals, and a new planner with motivational quotes.
You don’t fulfill the desire and still feel unhappy.
Or you do, and feel happy for a moment.
And then the cycle begins again.
The same cycle repeats itself throughout the day without you even noticing.
You feel uncomfortable?
You instantly reach for chocolate.
You feel hurried?
You look at your phone (as if that makes time slow down.)
Cranky?
You watch another cat-video to cheer yourself up.
It can make you happy—
for 3 seconds.
And then you need to reach for the next fix.
Or.
You leave the chocolate in the cupboard.
(For at least a minute.)
You see yourself reaching for your phone to find another cat-video, and you leave the phone alone.
(If only for 10 seconds.)
And you notice what you feel.
And you don’t move away from it.
And you see what happens when you don’t.
Discomfort was never the problem.
Constantly running away from it is what’s wearing you out, day in day out.
Love,
