“I feel a bit lost in my own life,” she said. “I feel like I’m not far enough along or something. Or like I have more potential but it’s not coming out. I can’t really put my finger on it. But something feels missing.”⁣
⁣
She’d tried to find the piece(s) she thought were missing.⁣
She’d worked with a coach to explore her talents and potential. ⁣
She’d done online tests, asked friends, and thought it through at least 3.4 million times.⁣
⁣
One thing was clear:⁣
⁣
She wasn’t going to think her way to an answer. ⁣
If she could, she’d have found the answer years ago.⁣
⁣
Then, she came to me. She told me everything she’d done, and how she still didn’t feel settled in her life. She was going through the motions and everything worked and money was good and she was healthy and her family loved her.⁣
⁣
And still.⁣
⁣
Friction.⁣
Tension.⁣
A sense of something missing. ⁣
Like eating steak without seasoning:⁣
The meat can come from a grass-fed cow who was massaged daily … and it still tastes like expensive cardboard. ⁣
⁣
“So, how are we going to solve this?” she asked. ⁣
⁣
“We’re not,” I answered. “And we’re also not going to explore what you believe or what you dream of or why you didn’t finish that drawing course when you were 22. We’re going to drop it all. And we’re not going to fix any discomfort.”⁣
⁣
“Oh,” she said. ⁣
And was quiet for a minute.⁣
So was I.⁣
⁣
“Well,” she said after that pause. ⁣
“Maybe that’s the way to go. Nothing I tried before worked, so let’s go for it.”⁣
⁣
Six months later, her sense that something was missing was as good as gone. It caught up with her at times, but didn’t bother her. And she no longer woke up and went to sleep with it.⁣
⁣
“I didn’t find some hidden potential or take massive leaps” she said. “But you know what? I no longer need it. I can’t explain it, but I feel like I fit in my life now. Or my life fits me.”⁣
⁣
Her question dropped.⁣
So did the discomfort of feeling misplaced in her own life. ⁣
It just dissolved somehow.⁣
So did her nail-biting habit she’d tried to end for years.⁣
And her tendency to always compare herself to others (and thinking she fell short somehow).⁣
⁣
“How did all this just … go away? I didn’t do anything for it. How is that possible?” she asked.⁣
⁣
“I don’t know,” I answered. “I never know what exactly will change when someone works with me. I only know that change always happens. Out of nowhere.”⁣
⁣
She shrugged. “Well, whatever. I’m just glad about how I feel now. It’s a world of difference with where I was three months ago. I feel at peace and at home in my life. I enjoy everything more. And I love that I didn’t have to do more self-improvement shit. I was over it. This feels so much better.”⁣
⁣
Nothing changed.⁣
And somehow, everything did. ⁣

⁣
