“You write so fast!
I’m a little jealous.
I wish I could write that fast, too.”
She was talking about my latest book,
𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺, 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧 —
𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘤.
I wrote it in 2 days.
It was fully edited the next day.
And the day after, it was on its way to the designer.
Yes, that’s fast.
And it doesn’t mean anything.
It doesn’t mean that I’m a fast writer.
There isn’t even a writer here.
It doesn’t mean I know something you don’t.
It doesn’t mean I have special powers.
And it doesn’t mean I’m lucky or blessed.
I worked on my second book, Unmute Your Life,
for over 8 years.
I rewrote it 8 times.
Back then, I thought the struggle meant something.
That the process was mine to manage, fix, or understand.
It never was.
No one writes fast.
Or slow.
No one is an excellent writer.
And no one is a bad one.
Why?
Because there’s no one writing.
The book writes itself.
Or: life writes books.
Life does everything.
Sometimes it unfolds in days.
Sometimes in years.
No one knows why.
And it doesn’t mean anything.
If you think you should write faster /
do better /
stop procrastinating /
get your ass into gear, dammit!—
Relax.
You were never doing anything.
There isn’t anyone here to do it.
It’s all life, doing everything.
Whether something goes fast or slow,
works out or fails—
it’s all life.
It has nothing to do with you.
And it doesn’t mean a thing.
