A tiny piece of toothpick snapped off—right where I couldn’t reach it. Shit. I tried to get it out, but it didn’t budge. My mind instantly, automatically,  went to worst case scenarios.

What if it never got out? What if it somehow wriggled its way into my gums  and got terribly infected? What if I had to go to the dentist for it  and end up with a long and painful procedure?

Some years ago, I’d have taken these thoughts seriously and spiraled into a full-blown panic-sweat-fest. Now, I saw it all for what it was: Thoughts. Autopilot thoughts,  repeating stale stories of everything that could go wrong. Expect the worst, so reality feels like relief.

Now, the thoughts were just there.  I watched.  Then they were gone. I googled what to do, and found some useful tips. Tried some, nothing worked. I shrugged. Ah well, it would get solved somehow— either by me, the dentist, or out of the blue.

The next day, that nasty little piece was gone. I don’t know how. I don’t know when. I don’t care.

Things just work out.

They always do.

That’s all I need to know.

Love,
