Early this morning, I was riding my bike through Leiden.

It was that moment when the sun’s not quite up, and the streetlights almost go out. Everybody was rushing to work, school, university.

I slowed down to watch the rushing, the busyness.

I took it all in, breathed deeply, enjoyed watching it, not being part of it, being centered in my own inner peace and quiet.

Time slows down when you slow down.

But…sometimes that’s easier said than done.

When you’re up against a deadline, have a giant to-do-list, and everybody wants something from you.

These tips help you slow down to find quiet in the middle of busyness:

#1 Deepen your breathing

When your breathing is deep and slow, you are centered and calm.

When your breathing is fast and shallow, you’re not grounded and certainly not relaxed.

It’s one or the other.

The best, fastest and easiest way to calm down is to

s.l.o.w.

d.o.w.n.

y.o.u.r.

b.r.e.a.t.h.i.n.g.

Start breathing deeper. Inhale slower. Exhale slower.

Inhale 4 counts. Pause. Exhale 4 counts.

Do this at least 5 times.

Inhale a little deeper, and exhale a little more, every time.

Notice how you feel now.
