When I started my business in 2003, I didn’t know anything about marketing.
I didn’t think I needed to know about it either – I figured if I just did a good job, clients would automatically find their way to me.
I had some clients, but it wasn’t enough.
I didn’t make enough money, couldn’t pay my bills, didn’t make the difference I wanted to make, and felt terribly frustrated and unhappy about it.
Very reluctantly I started to learn about marketing.
I signed up for a marketing program, but it didn’t bring me the results I hoped (and needed).
The other people in the group made lots of progress, and they had great results to share almost every week. (‘I signed up 3 new clients!’ ‘I filled my first workshop!’ ‘25 people signed up for my list!’)
My results? Fuck all.
OK, I did start my newsletter during this program. And about 3 people signed up for it (my parents, my best friend, and my partner).
But I didn’t get ANY new clients.
Even though I got the same information the other participants received.
And made the same kind of plan. And took the same type of actions.
It was pretty damn frustrating and it made me feel like the loser of the group.
So what did I do wrong?
Others succeeded where I failed, using the same tools and strategies I was using, so the problem MUST be me, right?
But it took me a while to figure that out.
Here’s why it didn’t work for me (and why marketing is NOT working for so many other mission driven entrepreneurs, as well):
I still thought and felt bad about marketing.
I still saw it as a necessary evil.
Not something I liked or enjoyed doing at all. It was a chore, something that had to be done, but definitely not something I wanted to do.
I felt marketing was sleazy, and I was bothering others with it.
It didn’t feel comfortable to become more visible. (In fact, that scared the shit out of me.)
It felt I was tooting my own horn, like I had to constantly shout things like ‘hey, look at me, I’m fantastic and so brilliant and you should really hire me because I’m just so damn good, you know!’
I didn’t feel good about it.
And what you think, feel and believe about something determines your actions, and the results you get.
To change how I felt and get better results, I had to do some inner work first:
I had to change my mindset.
Once I did that, and uncovered my OWN deepest reasons that deeply inspired me to do marketing, I finally got much better results.
(AND eventually even started to LIKE marketing….who’d have thought!)
If you uncover and connect to your own, personal motivation that makes you WANT to do more marketing, your results will rapidly improve.
You won’t dislike or hate marketing anymore, which makes it easier to market at all or more than you already do.
People will feel that your heart and soul are in it, which makes you much more attractive for them.
