the real reasons you don't achieve your goals

It’s the time of year to evaluate the goals you planned to achieve this year. If you didn’t achieve all of them, this question immediately pops up:

Why didn’t I?

Usually it’s because of one of these 5 reasons:

Reason #1: totally unrealistic and/or crappy formulated goal

You don’t necessarily have to create super SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant or realistic, time-bound) – but it sure helps.

You have to be clear. You have to be specific. You have to be able to take actions towards your goal.

Get clear on what it is you really want, be as specific as possible, and formulate a new goal that IS workable for you.

Reason #2: something changed along the way

When you no longer want something, your energy and focus automatically move away from your goal – and you probably won’t reach it.

Dump the goal(s) you no longer really want. There’s no point in pursuing them. Create new goals for the things you DO want right now.

Reason #3: Not taking enough or the wrong actions

You have to take enough of the right actions, the right way, in the right time.

How do you know if your actions are right?

Use common sense, be honest with yourself, listen to your intuition, and ask for feedback from a coach or mentor who knows what they’re talking about.

How do you know if you’ve taken enough actions?

Be honest with yourself. Ask yourself: is there something, ANYTHING you can still do today? Is there something, ANYTHING, you know, deep down, you should have done?

Which actions would you take?

Reason #4: Fear

Sometimes our goals scare the crap out of us. We know what to do, when to do it and even how to do it…but we’re just too scared.

Now what?

Take smaller steps. Learn to stretch yourself. Learn to take action despite your fears. Learn how to focus more on your dreams than you do on your fears.

Get help and support. You don’t have to do it alone. And you probably can’t.

“Success always takes help. Failure you can do alone“. Simon Sinek

Reason #5: you’re not in it to win it

You set your goal, but you did not DECIDE you would no shit go for it no bloody matter what.

You did not COMMIT to your goal. You’re not prepared to do what it takes to achieve it.

Read your goal, and say out loud:

“I am getting this done, no matter what! I DECIDE I will succeed and I COMMIT to do what it takes!”

What happens when you say this? Can you feel that you mean it? Are your heart and soul in it? Do you feel your passion, and how much you want this?

If not, you’re not committed enough.

This either means you don’t want it after all, OR that you’re scared.

Scared you can’t do it, you don’t have what it takes, you’re not good enough, you might fail, etc.etc.

Get help to learn to overcome your fears and act despite them. Learn to deal with your doubts, develop a strong and positive mindset, and do not give up.

Don’t ever give up.

But even when you do the right things and are highly committed, there can still be goals you just can’t achieve.

You don’t always succeed.

Sometimes because the universe has something much better in store for you.

And sometimes it was all about the journey, and never about the goal.

“A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.”

Bruce Lee
